Hurghada is a four-mile-long holiday resort built along the coast, divided into three areas: El Dahar, Sekalla, and New Hurghada.

El Dahar (downtown), located in the northern part of the city, is Hurghada’s oldest area. El Dahar is home to many Egyptians, and this is where you can make the best bargains. Make sure to visit the local ‘souk’, a night bazaar with everything from fruit and vegetables to shoes, rugs, and hookahs. If you want to get to know the “real” Egypt and feel the local atmosphere, the night bazaar is the place to visit. Most activity at the bazaar takes place in the evening.

Sekalla is considered the centre of Hurghada. The main road, Sheraton Road, offers bazaars, restaurants, cafés, and bars. Sekalla is also home to Hurghada’s famous marina, the “new marina.” The marina is a modern area which offers international restaurants, but it’s also a bit more expensive. Enjoy a yummy ice cream with a view of the beautiful luxury yachts lined up in the marina. Sekalla also has the best nightlife in Hurghada.

The southern parts of Hurghada are usually called New Hurghada, which is the largest of the three districts. New Hurghada is where you’ll find the big hotel complexes that have invested enormous amounts to be able to offer everything you could possibly want during your vacation. These hotels often have spas, water parks, pharmacies, ATMs, restaurants, bars, and more. In New Hurghada, you’ll also find the shopping mall Senzo Mall, where you will find many good stores and an amusement park for children.

It’s easy and cheap to travel on a minibus or a taxi between the different districts.

General Facts

• Never drink tap water that hasn’t been boiled. If you’re sensitive, use bottled water even when you are brushing your teeth.
• Using a taxi is an easy way to get around. We recommend you come to an agreement with the driver about the price before you get in the taxi. Never pay until you’ve reached your destination, and pay attention to the value of the bills when you pay. There are also round-the-clock minibuses that go between the different districts. This public transport is the cheapest way of travelling in Hurghada. If you want to hop on a bus, just stand by the side of the road and wave (have the exact change with you).
• A visa is required to travel to Egypt. For more information, contact the Egyptian embassy.
• Travelling with children! Hurghada is the perfect destination for a family vacation. The beaches are often shallow, the hotels are well-equipped, and it’s relatively cheap with food and drinks.
