Yerevan is the capital and largest city of Armenia, the current population of the city is about 1,100,000 and it’s also one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world. It’s located on the banks of the Hrazdan River in the central-western part of the country, framed by the extinct volcanic mountains, both to the north and across the Turkish frontier to the south.
The history of Yerevan dates back to the 8th century BCE, with the founding of the fortress of Erebuni in 782 BCE by King Argishti I of Urartu – the remains are today a notable landmark and tourist attraction. In addition to a range of other historical sites, churches, monasteries, and citadels in the area, the actual city is home to several opera houses, theatres, museums, libraries, and other cultural institutions – one of the most impressive being the Matenadaran repository which contains one of the largest depositories of ancient books and manuscripts in the world.
Yerevan also offers a lively evening & nightlife scene with lots of restaurants, nightclubs, live venues, bars, karaoke clubs, cafés, tea houses, and casinos.
Yerevan has a steppe climate, aka “cold semi-arid climate”, with long, hot, dry summers and short, but cold and snowy winters. The temperature in August can reach up to 40 °C, and in January it can often be as cold as −15 °C and even lower.
