Montenegro

Montenegro’s natural landscape will take your breath away. Montenegro is dominated by mountain scenery, and the spectacular coastline towards the Adriatic Sea where the Bay of Kotor is the most dramatic part. It looks as if you are in a Norwegian fjord by the Mediterranean – but the difference is that here there are palm trees and orthodox chapels along the fjellside. Further into the fjord is Kotor. The old town here is on the UNESCO World Heritage List, and the town offers an intact village wall and a cozy promenade with small sandy beaches and bars along the coast.

Above the village wall are several medieval forts and fortresses, along the almost vertical mountain sides. This makes the town almost look like a movie set. Explore Durmitor National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where majestic mountains, glaciers and deep gorges await. Hike through the picturesque Tara River Canyon, the second deepest gorge in the world, or visit Biogradska Gora, one of Europe’s last virgin forests.

Let yourself be tempted by the flavors of Montenegrin cuisine, with Mediterranean and Balkan influences. Taste local delicacies such as Njeguški pršut (smoked ham), fresh seafood and hearty mountain specialties. Combine the meal with a glass of Vranac, the country’s signature red wine.

The most popular beach town along the Montenegrin riviera is Budva, with several village beaches and a large selection of restaurants, nightclubs and cafes, but which is still quite fun and family-friendly.

The food culture in Montenegro is (briefly) divided into two parts – along the Adriatic coast, fish and shellfish, garlic, olive oil and Italian dishes are mostly used, while inland the food is almost similar to the Serbian diet, with much more meat.

A local wine is produced in Montenegro, Vranac, from one of the world’s oldest grapes. The wine is a kind of national treasure for the country.
