Naples

Welcome to the home town of pizza!

Naples has about one million inhabitants, is close to the famous volcano Vesuvius, and is Italy’s third largest city after Rome and Milan.

The city can be perceived as a colourful chaos, with a jumble of people, scooters, children playing football in its narrow alleys among the fallen house facades. A big tip is to read Elena Ferrante’s books, then a lot will feel familiar, otherwise it will take a few days to adapt to Naples energy.

The city has been given new life, partly because of Elena Ferrante who is mainly known for her books, the Naples Quartet, with the plot placed in post-war Naples, which means that more and more tourists find their way here.

Naples is traditionally the home town of pizza and especially the Margherita. Covered with tomato, mozzarella and basil, these ingreditents represent the colours of the Italian flag of red, white and green. The pizza got its name when it was served to Queen Margherita of the Savoy during a visit to the city.

The pizza is not a meditation, but should be eaten quickly! ”Cut a triangle and lift it up, the tip should fold down and not be hard. Then it is a real pizza from Naples,” says Gino Sorbillo, who is one of Naples’ most popular pizza bakers. Competition is tough among the city’s 1,500 pizzerias!

Naples city life is intense and the pizza divine!

Tips when in Naples!

  1. Discover the city through a guided tour of the underground Naples.
  2. Naples Archaeological Museum: especially visit where they give information of ancient Naples and Pompeii.
  3. “Ciro a Mergellina” is a historic trattoria where they serve traditional Neapolitan food in a retro-styled environment.

The best time to visit: All year round, but avoid August, which is Italy’s holiday month, which means many places are closed.
