Athens

A modern metropolis!

Are you looking for a vacation in the big city, beach life or perhaps even a mix of both? Athens offers everything. You can travel here to be in the centre of everything, with all of the historical landmarks close by. If refreshing dips in the ocean and relaxing days in the sun are more of your thing, Norwegian Holidays offers several nice hotels along the Athens Riviera. In the exclusive resorts of Glyfada and Vouliagmeni, there are hotels that suit everyone, and from here, it is easy to travel into central Athens.

Athens developed its subway network when Greece was hosting the Summer Olympics in 2004, and the subway system is now one of the most modern and safe subway systems in the world. A tram line was also built for the Olympics, which goes in two directions, from the main square of Syntagma all the way down to Faliro and onwards to Vouliagmeni This makes it easy to get around in the city no matter the destination.

Norwegian Holidays’s top three recommendations:

  1. The Acropolis

Perhaps the most well-known attraction in Athens. The Acropolis Summit is located 150 meters above sea level, with the main temple devoted to the goddess Athena, who according to legend protects the city. Here, you get to experience a magnificent view of the city.

  1. Plaka

Athens has something for everyone, with Plaka being one of the most charming ones. This district is considered the historical heart of Athens, and here you find the oldest houses. In the small alleys, small shops are side by side with taverns and cosy cafés. Along the cobblestone streets, local artists put their works on display.

  1. Riviera

The Athens Riviera is incredibly cosy, with plenty of nice beaches. Here, Greek influences meet international ones, and the cuisine comes from all around the world.

Best time to visit: You can travel to Athens all year round. If you’re looking for beach life, your best time will be from May to September when the temperatures are at their highest. July and August have an average temperature of 40 degrees (Celsius).

Make sure to experience the contrasts where the Greek meets international influences!

Greece has introduced an accommodation tax for all commercial overnight stays. This tax varies based on the official classification of the hotel or apartment and the duration of your stay and is to be paid directly to the hotel when checking in.
