Split

Split-Dalmatia is on of Croatia’s 21 counties and is located center-south in this beautiful country. This part of Croatia is filled with spectacular nature and intriguing tales of historical heroes and conquests. The area also offers fantastic bathing opportunities in the crystal-clear waters of the Adriatic Sea!

The most visited and prominent city in the region is Split, the main city in Dalmatia and second largest in Croatia, with its amazing history going back to the 2nd or 3rd century BC.

Even though originally founded as a Greek colony, the history of Split is much associated with its Roman heritage – not surprising considering that about half of the old town consist of the remains of Diocletian’s Palace, which has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1979. It was built for the Roman emperor Diocletian in the beginning of the 3rd century AD, but calling it a “palace” is actually a gross understatement – the structure is more of a fortress with half of it intended for the emperor’s personal use whilst the other half housed an entire military garrison! It is massive and needless to say, truly worth a visit.

Another lovely gem located south-west of Split in the Adriatic Sea, is the lavender covered island of Hvar. Here you can, among other locations, stay in the town of Hvar which in addition to its high pulse and great atmosphere, also has an interesting history going back to the middle-ages. You get here by ferry from Split, a ride that takes about 90 minutes. Please note that there are fewer departures during low season and the transfer service is limited. If staying on Hvar we recommend you take a day-trip to the nearby island of Brac which hosts one of Europe’s finest beaches – Zlatni Rat, aka the Golden Horn.
