Varna

Located on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, Varna is the country’s third-largest city, and apart from attracting tourists for all the obvious reasons, it’s often referred to as “the maritime capital of Bulgaria” and as such it’s also an important centre for e.g. business, education, entertainment and healthcare.

The city beaches, aka sea baths, are filled with hot mineral water sources and small sheltered marinas, and the waterfront promenade is lined by a string of beach clubs offering a vibrant music scene. If you’re interested in tasting and testing the local cuisine and produce, you should pay one of the many farmers markets a visit. The largest one, Kolkhozen Pazar, is a bit hard to get to by car, but among other things it has a great fresh fish market which will make the walk worth while.

Varna has many very interesting landmarks and sites, such as the Archaeological Museum, hosting the oldest and largest gold treasure in the world, the Gold of Varna. The treasure, dating back to 4600-4200 BC, was originally discovered in 1974 at what is now known as the Varna Necropolis, and since then they have found over 290 new burial sites and an additional 3000+ historical golden items.

When flying, you will arrive and depart from Varna Airport, the third largest airport in Bulgaria, located 10 kilometers from the city center, close to the the own of Aksakovo.
